Registration

help )

This is the start of the Census registration process to obtain free access to census data.

Registration will provide online access to the 1971-2001 census data resources and will also entitle you to use the resources of the Economic and Social Data Service (ESDS) and the History Data Service (HDS).

Each individual requiring access to data is required to register before access can be granted. Registration is only available to those carrying out academic and related work in UK higher and further education, some associated institutions and UK Research Council staff.

Registration will give access to most of the valuable data of the Census Programme, except those available from the longitudinal studies and some microdata for which there are separate application arrangements. Anyone wishing to use the aggregate statistics, digitised boundary datasets, interaction data, National Statistics Postcode Directory or Samples of Anonymised Records (SARs), must register here.

The resources available via Census.ac.uk do not provide historical census data of the kind necessary for family history or genealogical research. You may find some useful information in our guide to historical and genealogical census resources.

How to register

First you will be asked to log in. Information about how to login can be found at login help.

After logging in, there are three steps for you to follow in the registration process:

Step 1: Provide personal information, including information about your academic discipline and institution.

Step 2: Review and accept the End User Licence which gives access to the census data.

Step 3: Review Special Conditions which apply to the use of certain datasets, and consider whether you need to accept these for the data you wish to use.

If you require assistance during this process there is a link to relevant help.

Registration is completed by your use of a link which we send to you in an email. The email is sent soon after completion of the online process and the link remains valid for 28 days.
