Census.ac.uk, home of the ESRC Census Programme, provides a one stop gateway to data and support services which allow users and
researchers in UK Higher and Further Education to access the 1971, 1981, 1991 and 2001 UK censuses. It also provides
access to other important census related resources.
Anyone is welcome to use the open resources of this web site and search metadata and publications, but to access most
data registration and acceptance of licence terms relating to access and use of the data is required. The Quick Guide is a
useful first step to using census data via Census.ac.uk.
Links to the data are provided in search results, metadata records and guides. Users can also go directly to the individual Programme units.
The census outputs are available in a number of forms and there is detailed information about these, their content
and how to access the data in the Census.ac.uk guides, especially those covering:
There is a list of guides relating to the resources available from Census.ac.uk. These include an overview of
census questions,
forms and definitions.
Brief guides are also available to assist where Census.ac.uk is not the most appropriate, nor the only relevant, source of
census data. These cover: modern census data generally;
historical and genealogical resources, where the focus
of research is family history or pre-1901; and some international
census resources.
A help desk operates to assist users who are having difficulty registering or, once registered, gaining access
to, or using, any of the census resources. There are also a number of FAQs dealing with
common issues.
Registered users can go to their MyCensus area to view and update their personal details and submit details of their research outputs.
Feedback from users is valued and an online facility is provided for this.
